This afternoon I met Cesar. He was standing beside his boat, his nets draped over posts in the sand as he mended them with sure fingers. I lingered nearby like a child, pretending to be interested in his dog. In truth, I wanted only to watch him spin his webs, to peer through the woven lines stretched against the blushing sky of day's end. Soon enough, Cesar's gaze met mine and I greeted him, “Oi.” He smiled and kept working. But I knew the smile to be an invitation from another curious person, and so I drew closer.
Our conversation ended, in the inevitable coolness that follows these tropical winter days, with an invitation to join him tomorrow morning out in the Atlantic Ocean. Just Cesar and me on a fishing boat at 4am.
The boat looks much bigger up close than from afar. I want to go tomorrow. I want to measure its dimensions with my body, from inside. I want to measure that space against the vast expanse of water, lifting and dropping us on toward the horizon. I want to be as a net, sifting the sky, the sand, the water, letting it all pass through me, save the wriggling, shimmering parts that I'll bring ashore.
