about

The doorbell rings.  An interruption in a rare morning home alone in the kitchen.  I dry my hands and open the door, just in time to see a young man descending the steps to leave.  I greet him, sticking my body out through the open door into the spring day, and he lumbers back up the steps.  Without looking up from his shoes, he explains that he’s been out since six this morning looking for work:  yardwork, handywork, housework.  I explain there’s nothing to be done around the house, and besides, our landlord takes care of all that.  There are some older folks on the block, though, who might appreciate help.  I point out which houses to try.
I invite him in for fruit and water.  We talk about his family.  He never once looks at me but I see the distress in his face.
When he leaves, the distress stays behind.  I stand in the hall with eyes clenched shut and imagine the brave millions, ringing all the doorbells of every home on the planet, the doorbells of every head of state and CEO, interrupting many important days.
“Good morning. I am looking for work.”

lyrics

There is no work on these streets anymore
Where is the harbor for the weary?
Many are the nights my heart feels hard as a bone
A quiet drone.

I told him, “Don’t come back until you’ve found work.”
I told him, “I’m caring for your babies.”
Family’s far away, out on an island in the sea
Oh, mercy me.

He tells me it’s different, he tells me he’s changed
And I know that he’s doing all he can
But sometimes all he can is stumble home after dark
A burning spark

Once we had eyes that shone brighter than the stars
And we lifted them up into the sky
But now we are so tired from all the strength it takes to live
No more to give

There is no work on these streets anymore
Where is the harbor for the weary?
Many are the nights my heart feels hard as a bone
A quiet drone
All alone
A sinking stone
