about

I thought it was snow at first; pale, wispy objects floating by. After all, it had been snowing on and off all morning, the flurries silently drawing me into daydreams. But these bits were all the wrong color, size, shape. What could they be? Startled by a sudden realization, I rushed from my desk to the window and looked above to see a regal silhouette against the grey sky. A hawk in the bare branches of our neighbor's tree. It lowered its hooked beak between its talons and tore at the flesh of the bird it held there. Feathers scattered everywhere and drifted on the wind.
I tell you this because I know you are in need of comfort these days. The sourceless sadness that has cloaked you, oh, I see you struggle to pry yourself free. At the threshold of the new year I thought you might find some solace in news of this rare and precious disruption to our right-angled world. We destroy and construct and destroy again, but the wild among us always win.
I watched until the hawk had finished eating and the soft remains of its meal had settled on the block. It took flight then, folding its wings back into the vastness of this city.

lyrics

All the trees are bare and brown and the frost has covered everything
Be near me now
There are longer days awaiting in the new year.

As the hollow weeks wore on, still, the puddle on your pillow grew
Be near me now.
There are brighter days awaiting in the new year.

You will find the missing key (it shall be, it shall be)
And you’ll reveal the hidden door (it shall be, it shall be)
You will banish all the demons to a sparkling glow (it shall be, it shall be)
No one said it would be easy but you’ll find your way home (it shall be, it shall be, it shall be)

Oh, you raised your voices high and still the mighty shot your banner down
Be brave, my friend
There are peaceful times awaiting in the new year.

And the light within your eyes from the flame of life ablaze in you
Stay close, my friend
I will need you more than ever in the new year.

You will paint your palette green (it shall be, it shall be)
And you will mend the broken shoes (it shall be, it shall be)
We will walk into the sunlight of another broad day (it shall be, it shall be)
With our pockets full of juniper and nothing to lose (it shall be, it shall be)

You will find the missing key (it shall be, it shall be)
And you’ll reveal the hidden door (it shall be, it shall be)
You will banish all the demons to a sparkling glow (it shall be, it shall be)
No one said it would be easy but you’ll find your way home (it shall be, it shall be, it shall be)
